Orientation at Reed this year was a rousing success, thanks to the hard work and creativity of student coordinators Tim Doyle ’03 and Patrick Stockstill ’03. Everything from the many activities for parents and students to the Russian Revolution–themed t-shirts went over well with all concerned. Most families attended convocation, the official opening of the academic year. Ellen Stauder, acting dean of the faculty and professor of English and humanities, spoke on the Odyssey and on how Ezra Pound used it in his poetry. Welcoming words from acting president Peter Steinberger, trustee Stephen McCarthy ’66, and student body president Andy Bruno ’03 (resplendent with green hair) sent all off with great hope for the coming year.
