In memory of former staff members

Judy (Fannie) Zuck, secretary to the Master of Arts program at Reed for 21 years, died in January at age 87. Zuck went to high school in Seattle, then earned an A.A. degree from Colorado College and a B.A. from the University of Washington. She graduated from the Katherine Gibbs School in New York, then moved to Chicago to begin her career; there she met and married Edwin Zuck. Zuck was an avid nature lover and a hiker and skier, and in her retirement she traveled widely overseas. Survivors include her husband, two sons, and three grandchildren. Her son Jeremy died in 1967.

Hazel Nye, former supervisor of dorms and buildings at Reed, died in Portland in January at age 82. Nye was born Alisa C. Monroe in Victoria, Australia, in 1921. She immigrated to the United States as a young woman, and she worked at Reed for 21 years. Survivors include a son and two daughters, two brothers and two sisters, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Two longtime members of Reed’s business office staff died in December. Delores Steffen, former controller, died at age 60. She was hired as Reed’s controller in 1979 after working at Omark Industries as general accounting manager. Steffen left Reed in 1987, when she was appointed vice president of finance at Allegheny College. She was living in Creston, California, at the time of her death.

Mable Miller died of cancer at age 67. She was born on March 7, 1933, in Texas and moved to Portland in 1964. She worked as a student loan clerk at Reed from 1967 until her retirement as accounting assistant in 1995. Survivors include her husband, Donald; a son; four brothers and four sisters; and two grandchildren. End of Article
