in Stalinist Russia

ROMP! (Reediana Omnibus Musica Philosopha), Reed’s annual symposium on music and the liberal arts, turned its attention in January to the relationship between the murderous Stalinist political regime and the leading artists who served that regime while creating works of great beauty, complexity, and emotional expressiveness. ROMP!, sponsored by the Roth Family Foundation, explored this topic through film, concerts, and panels and discussions — many standing-room only — featuring notable visiting scholars. To complement ROMP!, Chamber Music Northwest, in conjunction with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, presented a three-concert series, “Masterpieces of the Russian Underground.”
