hedonism 101: theory into practice

Hedonism is defined as the pursuit or indulgence of pleasure. Its roots lie in ancient Greece and Rome; today forms of hedonism are alive and well. In this course we will examine the psychological and anthropological basis of hedonism and look at how hedonism manifests itself today. We will then indulge ourselves with specific aspects of hedonism: food and drink. The Greek philosopher Epicurus will be one of our guides, as will the Greek god Bacchus. Lecturers will be Roger Porter, professor of English and humanities; Lena Lencek, professor of Russian and humanities; cookbook author Diane Morgan ’77; and Gail Kelly ’55, professor emerita of anthropology.
