The Bay Area chapter had a busy winter: in January a capacity crowd of 75 alumni and friends enjoyed a lecture by Reed assistant professor Elizabeth Drumm on Spanish playwright Rafael Alberti. Later that month, Drew McCormick '84 organized a weekend trip for alumni to take the waters among the redwoods at the delightful Orr Hot Springs outside Ukiah. In February the chapter trained volunteers in the techniques of oral history for the alumni board's oral history of Reed project. Many thanks to Lauren Lassleben '75 for coordinating the training and to Gail Kurtz '82 for being the trainer.

The Boston chapter has put on a slew of events, including a Reed on the Road lecture by professor of mathematics Tom Wieting, a "donut social," and a bowling party. Bostonian Reedies gathered for a dim sum excursion at China Pearl in Chinatown. Members of the New York chapter attended a February beer tasting hosted by William Abernathy '88 at the Ginger Man. In March, the chapter welcomed Reed on the Road music professor David Schiff, who gave his popular lecture on Duke Ellington. The Portland chapter sponsored and hosted a breakfast lecture in March by Reed president Steven Koblik that focused on Reed's status as an independent college and its voice (or lack thereof) in higher education. The garden club sponsored a lecture by local TV news anchor and master gardener Anne Jaeger. Portland steering committee member Susan Reagel '97 arranged for the internationally known band B–lgari to perform in April, bringing alumni and students together for some traditional Bulgarian dance and song. The chapter looks forward to helping with (and participating in) Reunions 2000 in June.
The Rainier chapter will have its annual summer picnic in early August_watch your mailbox for an invitation. Other Rainier groups such as the Reeding club and the brewpub touring group have ongoing activities. The southern California book group meets the second Sunday of each month at a member's home. Members take turns choosing selections. The May selection is Nikolai Gogol's Dead Souls. Alumni visiting from out of the area are invited to read the book, call for the location, and join us. The annual chapter picnic is scheduled for Sunday afternoon, September 17, at a lovely park in Culver City.
The Washington, D.C., chapter hosted a Reed on the Road lecture by math professor Tom Wieting in April. Many thanks to Paul Levy '73, who has coordinated a group to attend the D.C. United vs. the New England Revolution soccer game on May 13.
