Over the past few months print and electronic media
have run numerous stories about the European
neutrals, particularly Switzerland and Sweden, and
their role in the Holocaust. The tenor of the stories has been that new evidence has been uncovered that the neutrals "collaborated" actively with the Nazi regime and that they deliberately frustrated efforts of Jews, both to seek refuge during the war and to regain deposits placed in neutral banks after the war. In addition, the neutrals have been portrayed as conduits for moving "Nazi loot" from Germany to other localities after the defeat of Germany and the failure of the Nazi regime. These news stories have led to special funds being established in Switzerland, in Sweden, and in Norway (which was occupied) to support survivors of the Holocaust and other victims of persecution.
