lectureEllis Goldberg, director of the Middle East Center and chair of the graduate program in Near and Middle East studies at the University of Washington (and a Reed parent), spoke to a packed Vollum lecture hall at Reed during Parent and Family Weekend in November on the relationships between war, terror, and jihad. The lecture, which provoked lively discussion, was sponsored by the political science department and the Elizabeth Ducey lecture fund. End of Article

fencingGreg Jensen ’04, of Tacoma, Washington, first-place winner of Reed’s fourth annual Douglas Williams fencing tournament, with Williams’s widow, Carol Simpson, after she presented him with his medal. Douglas Williams ’63 endowed the tournament to promote fencing at Reed and to provide need-based scholarships. The other winners were Mercedes Ramirez ’04, of Chicago, Illinois, second; Matt Bellet ’02, of Walnut Creek, California, third; and Heather Van Zee ’04, of Hayfork, California, fourth.
