rugby reunion and gala match 2001
by Kurt Huffman 93
Due to a lack of better judgement, the Reed rugby alumni association organized a match in November against a team of current Reed students. Under sunny Portland skies, with a calm breeze tickling our knees, the alums unleashed an onslaught of cheap tackles, phantom punches, and generally naughty behavior onto the unsuspecting but incredibly valorous students. Thanks to the 20 to 100 pounds that we had each picked up since graduation, we were able to push ourselves on three different occasions into the hallowed land of the try. Despite our absurd size advantage, the Reed alums suffered from an alarming lack of recent physical activity, and the current students responded to our girth with impressive teamwork leading to a well-earned try. The general conclusion after the match was that it went on far too long and that we should have stopped after we scored our third try. The soirée ended at a local pizza joint, where we exchanged email addresses and drank more beer. I believe that I speak for the entire group when I say everyone had a wonderful time and really enjoyed spending the day with current students. It was a moment that we all hope to share again next year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.
