Jan Kurtz Named Director of Development Jan Kurtz, newly named director of development, came to Reed two years ago from Portland State University, where she served as executive director of its foundation. With 18 years of experience in major-gift fundraising, 10 years of that in higher education, she replaces Johanna Thoeresz ’87, who left Reed to work for Mercy Corps. Since arriving, Kurtz has worked with great success to build relationships and encourage major gifts from Reed alumni and friends in the upper Midwest and northern California. “My favorite part of raising money for Reed is the often surprising, always provocative conversations I have with Reedies across the country,” says Kurtz. “Their feelings about the college are complex, their opinions are strongly held, and their aspirations for Reed are unstinting. I’m continually intellectually stretched by those encounters.” Kurtz is supported in her work by an experienced team of development professionals—Chris Brentlinger as director of major gifts, Becky Corcoran as director of planned giving, Diane Gumz as director of corporate and foundation support, and David Rubin as director of the Annual Fund. Says Hugh Porter, vice president for college relations, “As we enter critical years for fundraising in support of the college’s ambitions, I feel very fortunate to have the leadership of Jan and her team.” Kurtz, an avid outdoorswoman, recently climbed to Machu Picchu and enjoys cooking gourmet trail food far and wide in the backcountry of the Pacific Northwest. |
