Alumni News

Welcome Laura Miller ’92

Laura A. Miller ’92 has taken the role of administrative assistant for the alumni & parent relations office. It’s a repeat performance; Laura worked in alumni relations as a student and, after completing her degree in music, stayed on for awhile as a staff member. She returns to Portland after 12 years in Madison, Wisconsin, where she worked as a researcher and editor for the Center for Media & Democracy, volunteered as a reporter and producer at WORT-FM community radio, and regularly spun rare groove and down-tempo records at neighborhood taverns and parties. Laura takes over from Alison Olsav, who continues to work at Reed as implementation and reporting specialist for college relations information systems.

Venues Sought

Because saving on rental costs allows us to spend more on programming, we’re always looking for affordable—and appropriate—venues for activities that take place outside of Portland, away from the mother ship. Do you know of an inexpensive or free space that would work for a reception, talk, or both? Both homes and offices have worked well, especially if there is open space. Please send suggestions to alumni@reed.edu.

Small World

The next time you travel to a chapter city, take an opportunity to meet kindred spirits at a Reed chapter event. Check chapter webpages at www.reed.edu/alumni/chapters/ for a schedule. Also feel free to contact the steering committee to get the scoop on future gatherings or to solicit recommendations on lodging, dining, and local attractions. It is a small world . . . take advantage of the Reed network!

Insurance Available

Discounted short-term medical insurance is available to Reed alumni who need temporary coverage. Contact Meyer and Associates, 800/863-7801 or visit www.meyerandassoc.com.

Online Directory

Reed’s online alumni directory, now located in the Integrated Reed Information System (IRIS), has class notes, volunteer and job opportunities, and contact information. To register, enter your Reed ID (the six-digit number on your alumni card—contact alumni@reed.edu or 503/777-7589 if you don’t know yours) and birth date. Go to https://iris.reed.edu.

Alumni Board Notice Of Nominations

In accordance with the constitution of the Reed College alumni association, and following a call for nominations to all alumni in the Summer 2007 Reed magazine, the nominating committee of the alumni association hereby gives notice of nominations to the alumni board. All terms begin July 1, 2008. Please read short bios of the nominees at www.reed.edu/alumni/board_of_alumni/ or request a paper copy by calling 503/777-7589.

Call For Award Nominations

The alumni board invites nominations for awards to alumni volunteers who have made outstanding contributions to the college in 2007 through their volunteer efforts in the offices of alumni & parent relations, career services, admission, and development.

Also, the Foster-Scholz Club is seeking nominations of alumni who attended Reed 40 or more years ago (currently the classes of 1967 and earlier) for its distinguished service award. The award is presented at the Foster-Scholz Club & Annual Recognition Luncheon during Reunions. It is designed to recognize a club member (in Portland or not) who has made major contributions to the community and/or the college. The deadline for submissions is April 1, 2008. Submit nominations in writing to alumni@reed.edu.

2007 Alumni Holiday Party

Join us at the alumni holiday party on Saturday, December 8! You’ll find that Reed’s own boar’s-head procession is still observed with accustomed ceremony (you can join the Boar’s Head Ensemble Singers, too). For more information, contact alumni@reed.edu or call 503/777-7589. (If you did not receive an invitation in the mail, see the details and register online at www.reed.edu/alumni/holidayparty/.)

Camp Westwind

In October, 62 Reedies, family members, and friends met for a weekend at Camp Westwind on the Oregon Coast. Ages ranged from 9 months to 80 years. See pictures at www.reed.edu/alumni/westwind/story07.html.
