An Alumni Odyssey
In June, a group of nine Reedies, plus family members and guests, traveled through Greece for
nine days on a journey sponsored by alumni & parent relations. Wally Englert, Omar and Althea
Hoskins Professor of Classics and Humanities, accompanied the tour and gave lectures about the
sites visited. The trip took in numerous delights of Greece—from the wonders of Athens
to tiny Poros in the Aegean Sea, as well as the classical Greek cities of Mycenae and Epidauros,
and the magical islands of Aegina and Hydra. |
Call for Award Nominations
The alumni board invites nominations for awards to alumni volunteers who have made outstanding
contributions to the college in 2006 through their volunteer efforts in the offices of alumni
relations, career services, admission, and development. Alumni and non-alumni community volunteers
are also eligible for the outstanding volunteer award, which honors those who give to Reed through
many different forms of volunteer generosity.
Also, the Foster-Scholz Club is seeking nominations of alumni who attended Reed 40 or more
years ago (currently the classes of 1966 and earlier) for its distinguished service award. The
award is presented at the Foster-Scholz Club and Annual Recognition Luncheon during Reunions.
This tradition was begun in 1975 and is designed to recognize a club member (in Portland or not)
who has made major contributions to the community and/or the college.
The deadline for submissions is April 1, 2007. Submit nominations in writing to alumni@reed.edu.

That New Voice on the Phone . . .
. . . belongs to Alison Olsav, who has joined alumni & parent relations as our administrative
assistant (a role in which she will wear a multitude of hats). She earned her bachelor’s
degree in biology from UC Santa Cruz in 1997, and spent several years in alumni records and planned
giving at Swarthmore College. Alison originally hails from Portland, and is pleased to be back
in the verdant (if damp) Pacific Northwest. Speaking of greener pastures, our previous assistant,
Rachel Fredericks ’04, has gone north to pursue a Ph.D. in philosophy at the University
of Washington in Seattle. We wish her the best with her studies and welcome Alison to the fold.
When you call to sign up for Reunions 2007 (hint, hint), give her a warm Reed hello.
2006 Holiday Party
Mark your calendar for the alumni holiday party on Saturday, December 9! The nutcracker will
reign over this year’s celebration, but Reed’s own boar’s head procession is
still celebrated with accustomed ceremony. Help us keep this beloved custom alive by joining
the boar’s head ensemble singers. For more information email alumni@reed.edu or
call 503/777-7589. (If you did not receive an invitation in the mail, see the details
and register online.)
