Reunions 2001:
a jubilant time
Many alumni came to college to play and
learn this year, which made reunions constantly fun and surprising,
given the nature of Reedies. Alumni College was a great success,
with professors Evgenii Bershtein, Ülker Gökberk, Laura
Hendrickson, and David Schiff leading discussions on decadence in
opera, film, painting, and literature at the turn of the last century.

Events
open to all attendees included a bus tour of Columbia Gorge; walking
tours of downtown Portland, the campus, the Douglas F. Cooley Art
Gallery, and the rare book collection in the library; faculty lectures
by professors David Griffiths, Albyn Jones, Roger Porter, and Janis
Shampay; the Reed authors reception at the bookstore; and the
creative Midnight Theatre in chapel, where talent and spontaneity
were mixed to perfection. |
Class
events included a tour of Clear Creek Distillery in northwest Portland,
pitch and putt at Edgefield Golf Course, a tour of Eric
Lemelsons winery in Newberg, and two film screenings.
Special activities for children included a scavenger hunt, a trip
to the Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden, and an outdoor biology
laboratory designed by students in the Reed biology outreach program. |
Events culminated with the all-class parade
marching from the old library steps to the barbecue in the Gray Center
quad. Dancing, café bistro, and music and dancing in the student
union concluded a lively and eventful evening. Alumni, launching toward
parts known on Sunday, marked their charts for converging again in
June 2002. |
