Bay Area
The Bay Area chapter hosted a camp-out in June, organized by Drew McCormick '82. Alumni arrived with their tents and sleeping bags and enjoyed dinner, an overnight, and breakfast together on five acres of private land in the mountains near the American River, three hours from San Francisco. Call chapter chair Richard Thomason '84 at 510/524-3724 for information about upcoming events.

Boston
The Boston chapter is in the middle of its busy summer schedule, which has included an overnight camping trip to Maine, a night out at Fenway to see the Red Sox, and the start of regular features such as the video board, games nights, and the Amazin' Dunkin' Donuts Invasion. Back in April, over 40 Reed alumni attended the Reed on the Road lecture with Tom Wieting. For more information see
www.reed.edu/~slam/ alumni.html.

New York
Members of the chapter and their families gathered in July at the Rose Center for Earth and Space to visit the Hayden Planetarium. In addition to viewing the Museum of Natural History, Reedies saw the show Passport to the Universe, which flew them through a scientifically accurate virtual recreation of the Milky Way Galaxy and beyond. In July Kate Bieber '94 passed the mantle of chapter coordinator on to Daniel Beveridge '92.

Portland
The Portland chapter was busy in the spring with the usual commencement activities. The ice cream social and the Woodstock Wine and Deli reception were both well attended and appreciated. During reunions 2000, steering committee members staffed "Project Iliad," which involved packaging and mailing out copies of the Iliad to new students. Alumni at reunions wrote personal notes of encouragement (such as- "skip the catalogue of ships") to accompany the books.

Rainier
Alumni and friends attended a June potluck supper at the Center for Urban Horticulture near the University of Washington. August 13 is the date set for the chapter's annual summer picnic, to be held at Magnuson Park in Seattle. For information call Barb Corter Radin '75 at 206/523-2484 or send email to

Southern California
The fifth annual summer picnic is scheduled for Sunday, September 17, in Culver City, from noon to 4 p.m. The book group usually meets the second Sunday of each month at a member's home, with members taking turns choosing the reading selections. The August book selection is Naguib Mahfouz's Palace of Desire. Alumni visiting from out of the area are invited to both the picnic and the book group. For information call Robert Hadley '53 at 310/391-1427. Email:

Washington, D.C.
The D.C. chapter would like to thank professor Tom Wieting for his Reed on the Road lecture in April. Additional thanks to Paul Levy '73 for organizing the chapter outing to watch United vs. New England Revolution soccer match. In June Reed president Steven Koblik and director of alumni relations Marianne Brogan '84 joined alumni at the Swedish embassy for a Swedish buffet. Ambassador Rolf Ekeus and Kerstin Oldfelt Ekeus '60, and the D.C. chapter, sponsored the event. Watch your mailbox for notice of the summer picnic. Email David Baxter at
davesmaint@aol.com.

Other gatherings
Alumni in the Boulder and Denver areas made their annual pilgrimage to Mijbani Indian restaurant for an evening of exotic food and mingling with other mile-high Reedies.
