During an internship with the United Farm Workers (UFW) in 1996, Miriam Yarfitz '00 developed a passionate stance in support of agricultural laborers. She says the values upheld by the UFW, the labor union founded by Cesar Chavez, fit in with the social ideals she had learned at home and while participating in youth rights groups during high school in Seattle, Washington. Yarfitz's sense of social responsibility grew naturally out of her "radical Jewish education," in particular concepts she describes as repairing the world (Tikkum Olam) and administering justice and charity (Tzedakah) -concepts that Yarfitz feels are the shared responsibility of all people.
