Three of Reed's most memorable faculty members-Sam Danon, Gail Kelly '55, and Ray Kierstead-retired this spring. Together they have provided 100 years of teaching to thousands of Reed students. In many ways, the three are all quintessential Reed professors, whose lives are inextricably entwined with Reed and with teaching, and who are remembered by generations of students for their ability to inspire and their willingness to listen.
"Three true giants of the Reed faculty have retired," said Peter Steinberger, dean of the faculty. "Sam, Gail, and Ray are among those colleagues who have set a standard of excellence for the rest of us. Each has a powerful intellect, and each has used that intellect to the great benefit of our students. They have been among Reed's most distinguished and brilliant teachers and will be sorely missed."
