Peter J. Steinberger, the Robert H. and Blanche Day Ellis Professor of Political Science and Humanities, became ReedŐs dean of the faculty August 1. The dean of the faculty is ReedŐs chief academic officer and the second operating officer at the college. Steinberger was named the first Ellis professor in 1993 and has been on the Reed faculty since 1977. He is the author of The Concept of Political Judgment (University of Chicago Press, 1993) and Logic and Politics: HegelŐs Philosophy of Right (Yale University Press, 1988) as well as numerous scholarly and op-ed articles about political participation in democratic societies. Steinberger received a B.A. in 1970 and an M.A. in 1972 from Fordham University and a Ph.D. in 1975 from the University of California, Riverside. Steinberger succeeds Linda Mantel, who was ReedŐs dean of the faculty from 1993 to 1997.
