Among the library's treasures: Mark McDaniel
Mark McDaniel began working in the Reed library in August 1989. He is in charge of all circulation operations, including the more than 15,000 items that are placed on course reserve each year. McDaniel's contribution to Reed, however, goes far beyond his official job duties: he is known for always being ready to do whatever it takes to make the library a better place. In May he received the college excellence award, which recognizes exceptional Reed employees. Faculty and staff members who nominated him cited his "inventiveness, resourcefulness, and consistent good humor" and his "remarkable efficiency," characterizing him as an "unsung hero." Shortly after he received the award, the library staff organized a "Mark McDaniel Day" to show McDaniel how proud they were of him. While the library's building and its collections are essential parts of the Reed experience, staff members like McDaniel really make the library work.
