Political scientists tapped

Stefan Kapsch, professor of political science, appeared as a commentator on Portland and Northwest television news this fall, offering his views on the election. When a news crew walked through commons with Kapsch to find and interview Reed students who had not voted, they came up empty-handed: every single student they talked to had already cast a vote. Kapsch, who has often served as a news commentator on Bosnia and Kosovo, has been a member of the Reed faculty since 1974. Peter Andreas, assistant professor of political
science, spoke this fall at a symposium on U.S.-Mexico border relations
at the Washington, D.C., offices of the Inter-American Dialogue, the premier
U.S. center for policy analysis on Western Hemisphere affairs. Andreas
discussed his new book, Border Games: Policing the U.S.-Mexico Divide
(Cornell Univ. Press, 2000). Silvestre Reyes, Democratic congressman from
Texas and former border control chief in El Paso, commented on the book.
Andreas, who joined the Reed faculty this year, also has extensive experience
with the media and was a guest this fall on the News Hour with Jim Lehrer
