Community Matters
Lowercase Reed community, campus, student body, honor principle, resident adviser, dorm adviser (note spelling is "adviser," not "advisor"). Lowercase when in doubt.
"College": lowercase except when used with Reed:
Reed College, the college
not:
the College, the College campus
The canyon: is no longer a state wildlife refuge, despite the sign you can see from the bridge. It is considered a protected wetland.
Events: usually lowercased. Example:
commencement, convocation, parent or student orientation, o-week, reading week, spring or fall break, alumni or children's holiday party, reunions. Some exceptions are Parents and Family Weekend, First Wednesday, and Renn Fayre.
Official policies: lowercase, as are constitutions and senates:
dog policy, smoking policy, community constitution, constitution, student senate, senator
Paideia: no need to italicize. The term does not, contrary to Reed legend, mean "knowledge" - it is Greek for education, teaching, or training.
Phone numbers: spell out "extension" for campus phone numbers instead of using X or ext. Follow area codes in telephone numbers by a slash, with no spaces before or after, as in 503/771-1112. Residence hall: preferred over "dorm" or "dormitory."
