Reed College Mid-Year Orientation 2015-16

Orientation Odysseys

Each year, Reed offers several unique pre-orientation opportunities to first-year students. You can go on an outdoor adventure, participate in a community-service project, learn more about Reed and Portland, and build lasting relationships with your classmates. We call these journeys "Odysseys."

Orientation Odysseys are optional, but we recommend them. Students arrive to campus early and join their classmates in small groups to participate in one of these programs—the experience aims to help ease your transition to college life and enrich the orientation experience by providing opportunities for both personal growth and leadership development.

All Odysseys require preregistration and they fill up fast, so register now!

Conflicting Programs

Please note that the dates for Odysseys overlap. This means that you cannot participate in more than one program.

  • International students interested in an Odyssey can participate in either the International Orientation Odyssey (which is free of charge) or an Odyssey trip.

Moving into Your Room

If you participate in an Odyssey, you will be able to move into your residence hall room on Friday, August 21. Please be considerate of your new roommate when you arrive for your trip, especially if your roommate is not arriving at the same time. Do not completely unpack and settle in until you have negotiated room arrangements. Please arrive with the items that you will need for your trip packed separately from the items that you wish to leave at Reed. You are welcome to store the items that you won’t need on your trip in your room.

Substance Free

In order to make the Odysseys as safe and enjoyable as possible, drugs and alcohol are not permitted. Due to high-risk fire conditions in the fall, smoking is not allowed during the Outdoor Odysseys.

If you are a student in need of accommodations due to disability, physical or otherwise, please let us know in advance so we can be as accommodating and inclusive as possible in our programming. You may also contact Theresa Lowrie in the Disability Support Services office to discuss your needs and other possible accommodations for your time at Reed.
