Tashi Quartet Reunites for ROMP!, a collaboration of Reed College and Chamber Music Northwest

The Tashi Quartet will perform together live for the first time in 30 years at Reediana Omnibus Musica Philosopha (ROMP!).

The Tashi Quartet will perform together live for the first time in 30 years at Reediana Omnibus Musica Philosopha (ROMP!), the annual concert and lecture series jointly presented by Reed College and Chamber Music Northwest. This is the Tashi Quartet’s only scheduled appearance on the West Coast, and will feature work by Elliot Carter and Olivier Messiaen. ROMP! is held on the Reed College campus, January 25 -- 27.

The three historic concerts are part of the 100th birthday celebration of avant garde composers Elliot Carter and Olivier Messiaen, who were born one day apart in New York City and Paris, respectively. ROMP! also features lectures and multimedia presentations on their compositions and their influence on other composers.

ROMP! is Reed College’s three-day festival celebrating music and the liberal arts. This annual event is an opportunity for Reed’s accomplished music faculty to bring cultural events to campus and share them with the larger community. Tickets for the concerts are sold through the Chamber Music Northwest website or by calling 503/294-6400. Lectures take place in the Reed College Psychology Auditorium and are free and open to the public.

The original members of The Tashi Quartet who will be performing in ROMP! are Peter Serkin, piano; Richard Stoltzman, clarinet; Ida Kavafian, violin; and Fred Sherry, cello. They will also perform master works by Takemitsu and Wuorinen that were written especially for the legendary quartet.

ROMP!’s music and lectures are woven together to enhance the listening experience and to help bring insight into the works of Carter and Messiaen. David Schiff, Reed’s R.P. Wollenberg Professor of Music, was a student of Carter and is author of the book The Music of Elliott Carter. Professor Schiff kicks off the lecture series on January 25 with an overview of the featured compositions. Jann Pasler, professor of music at UC San Diego, lectures on January 26 about Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time, which was composed and premiered in a German concentration camp. Jonathan Bernard, professor of music theory at the University of Washington, will present “Carter and Messiaen: Contemporaneous Composers in Different Sound-Worlds,” also on January 26. The lecture series concludes with “Playing with the Masters: Reminiscences of Carter and Messiaen,” by Fred Sherry of the Tashi Quartet.
