The Valaam Ensemble

Organized in 1993 by five professional male singers in St. Petersburg, Russia, the Valaam Ensemble offer concerts that feature only their rich, pure voices, without any instrumental accompaniment. Their repertoire includes sacred and secular Russian music, including orthodox monastic chants and folk music from northern Russia.

The Valaam Ensemble spends summers at the ancient Valaam Monastery, a spiritual center for Russian Orthodoxy located on a group of islands in Lake Ladoga in northern Russia. The Ensemble performs for the thousands of pilgrims and tourists who visit the islands.
Members of the Ensemble are not monks, but they are dedicated to assisting in the restoration of the Valaam Monastery, which suffered considerable destruction during the Soviet regime and was consigned to oblivion for some fifty years.

During the rest of the year, they travel from their home base in St. Petersburg on concert tours that have, in more recent years, taken them to England, Germany, Finland, the United States, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia. The concert at Reed College is part of their first tour of the Northwestern United States.

The Valaam Ensemble concert is sponsored by Reed College’s departments of music, religion, and Russian, and by St. Nicholas Orthodox Church. There will be an additional sacred concert at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church following Vespers on Saturday, April 2. Visit http://www.stnicholaspdx.org/index.php for details.
