Orbit of the Sun King: Reed College faculty and staff present music and readings from the age of Louis XIV

TITLE: The Orbit of the Sun King : Music and Words from the Time of Louis XIV

WHAT: Reed College faculty and staff present music by D'Anglebert, Bacilly, Lully, and Marais, with readings from Moliere, Racine, and others.

WHERE: Eliot Hall Chapel (third floor, Eliot Hall), Reed College,
3203 SE Woodstock Blvd., Portland

COST: $10 general admission, $5 students and seniors, and free for Reed faculty, staff, and students.

This collaboration, presented by members of the Reed departments of French and music, will focus on the musical culture and writings of 17th- and 18th- century France. Jérôme Cornette, Visiting Assistant Professor of French , will be joined by Reed music staff members Bonnie Garrett (harpsichord), Tim Scott (viola da gamba), John Vergin (bass), and Amanda Jane Kelley (guest soprano) in a concert of music by D'Anglebert, Bacilly, Marais, and Lully interspersed with selected readings from the works of Malherbe, Viau, L'Hermite, Molière, and Racine. Beginning with poetry from the turn of the 17 th century and working up to the time of the Sun King and beyond, this program is drawing from such diverse forms as the air de cour , opera, sonnet, chanson, and instrumental suite.

Orbit of the Sun King is presented by Reed College's departments of French and music.
