JOURNALIST AND AUTHOR THOMAS GOLTZ TO LECTURE AT REED ON WAR IN CHECHNYA

Portland, OR (October 27, 2003)–Thomas Goltz will present a lecture and video titled War and Retribution in the Caucasus: A View from Multiple Fronts on Thursday, November 6, at 4:30 p.m. in the Reed College psychology auditorium.

Sponsored by the Reed College Russian and anthropology departments, the lecture is free and open to the public. For more information visit the Reed events site or call the Reed events line at 503/777-7755.

Thomas Goltz is the author of the newly published Chechnya Diary: A War Correspondent’s Story of Surviving the War in Chechnya (M.E. Sharpe, 2003). Goltz began work on his account of the ongoing war in Chechnya in the summer of 1991, when rival ethnic and nationalist movements began preparing for chaos and war. Goltz will examine the events of this tiny principality’s attempts at freedom and the horrors of the Samashki Massacre–the symbol of the Russian brutality employed to crush Chechen resistance.
