PORTRAITS OF CONFUCIUS WORKSHOP AT REED COLLEGE

Portland, OR (October 24, 2003)—Reed College will host a workshop, "The Varied Portraits of Confucius," on November 1 and 2, 2003, in Reed’s psychology auditorium.

Stephen Durrant, of the University of Oregon, and Michael Nylan, from the University of California–Berkeley, will present lectures and lead discussion on early portrayals of Confucius in China. The scholars, joined by He Jianjun, Tony Clark, and Matthew Morgan, Han text specialists from the University of Oregon, will examine how people see not one Confucius but several Confuciuses—each the portrait of different artists’ brushwork.

Lecture:The Master Did Not Do What I’m Doing Now: Confucius in Zuo Zhuan

Durrant is the author of The Cloudy Mirror: Tension and Conflict in the Writings of Sima Qian, in which he describes Sima Qian’s portrayal of the master as a kind of self-portrait.

Lecture: Two Confuciuses: His Shi ji and Analects Portraits, ca. 100 B.C.

Nylan has written the only thorough survey of the Classicist canon with The Five "Confucian" Classics, published in 2001.

A student workshop on the primary sources, led by Stephen Durrant and Michael Nylan.
