This year Reed College has received a record high number of applications for enrollment. The college has received 2,275 applications, which is 23 percent higher than the 1,847 total last year and 32 percent higher than the 1,731 total in 2001. The new record is 6 percent higher than the old record of 2,149, set in 1995.

As always, Reed has an extremely qualified and somewhat self-selecting applicant pool. The mean GPA for all applicants is 3.7, mean SAT is 1340, and mean ACT is 29. The pool is 54 percent female and 46 percent male, and approximately 20 percent of the applicants are students of color.

Paul Marthers, Reed's dean of admission, attributes part of the rise in applications to new initiatives undertaken by the admission office, including significant improvements in the website and publications.

Reed College, in Portland, Oregon, is an undergraduate institution of the liberal arts and sciences dedicated to sustaining the highest intellectual standards in the country. With an enrollment of about 1,360 students, Reed ranks third in the undergraduate origins of Ph.D.s in the United States and second in the number of Rhodes scholars from a liberal arts college (31 since 1915).
