FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NUCLEAR SAFETY LECTURE RESCHEDULED FOR FEB. 6
Michael J. Lawrence, manager of nuclear safety and technology at the Battelle Memorial Institute at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), will give two lectures on Wednesday, February 6, at 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. in Reed’s psychology auditorium. The lecture at 5:30 p.m., aimed at an audience with related technical interests, is on "The Advanced Nuclear Science and Technology Initiative at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory." The lecture at 7 p.m., for a more general audience, is on "Challenges for the Use of Nuclear Energy in the 21st Century." The lectures, sponsored by Reed’s research reactor facility, are free and open to the public. For more information, call the Reed events line at 503/777-7755.
The Advanced Nuclear Science and Technology Initiative (ANSTI), the subject of Lawrence’s first talk, will build on PNNL’s existing capabilities and expertise to establish PNNL as a leader in select areas of nuclear science and technology. ANSTI will respond to national needs for nuclear security, environmental management, basic science, medical science, and current and future nuclear power applications. Lawrence will also discuss related opportunities for education and professional careers.
In his second lecture, Lawrence will discuss the opportunities, advantages, and risks of nuclear power in the modern age. He will address the need for additional electricity, the characteristics of nuclear technology, and challenges (and solutions) to the use of nuclear energy.
Michael Lawrence has over 30 years of management experience in the nuclear industry. Currently, he is manager of the nuclear safety and technology product line at the PNNL in Richland, Washington. From 1968 to 1990 Lawrence worked for the Department of Energy and its predecessor agencies. As manager of the Department of Energy's Hanford Site from 1984 to 1990, Lawrence oversaw the transformation of the site from a nuclear weapons material production site to an environmental restoration area. In the private sector, Lawrence was president and chief executive officer of Pajarito Scientific Corporation in Los Alamos, New Mexico, and chief operating officer and executive vice president of British Nuclear Fuels of Fairfax, Virginia. From 1991 to 1995 Lawrence served in the U.S. Foreign Service as councilor of nuclear policy. There, he represented the United States to the International Atomic Energy Agency and was responsible for strengthening nonproliferation enforcement against Iraq.
