Ben Murphy, a junior from Yarmouth, Maine, has been awarded an Edwin, Frederick, and Walter Beinecke Memorial Scholarship worth $32,000 in support of graduate education.

Murphy, a graduate of Yarmouth High School, is a history major with a focus on China. He has participated in a variety of activities throughout his Reed career, including numerous theatre productions. He is the recipient of ReedÂ’s DeanÂ’s Fellows award and two commendations for academic excellence. After graduating from Reed, Murphy plans to spend a year in China or Japan and then attend graduate school in the United States or Taiwan, studying history or Chinese literature.

The Beinecke Brothers Memorial Scholarship Program of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, was established to commemorate New York businessmen Edwin, Frederick, and Walter Beinecke through awards to young men and women of exceptional ability and achievement. The program seeks to encourage and enable highly motivated students to take the fullest advantage of graduate opportunities available to them and to be courageous in the selection of graduate study programs. Each participating institution can nominate only one student each year. No more than 20 students receive scholarships each year, and the selection process is extremely competitive. Most recipients are at the top of their class academically and many plan to pursue careers in teaching and research.
