WOUTER J. HANEGRAAFF TO SPEAK ON ESOTERICISM
Wouter J. Hanegraaff will discuss "Beyond the Yates Paradigm: The Study of Western Esotericism between Counterculture and Postmodernity" on Wednesday, April 5, at 7 p.m. in the Reed psychology auditorium. Hanegraaff has published extensively on the Western esoteric tradition and the methods of its study. His work on the New Age movement is considered the most comprehensive and authoritative on the subject. Hanegraaff holds the newly established Chair of the History of Hermetic Philosophy and Related Currents, in the department of theology and religious studies at the University of Amsterdam. He is the author of New Age Religion and Western Culture: Esotericism in the Mirror of Secular Thought (SUNY Press, 1998) and the co-editor of Gnosis and Hermeticism: From Antiquity to Modern Times (SUNY Press, 1997) and Female Stereotypes in Religious Traditions [Studies in the History of Religions Volume 66] (Brill Academic Publishers, 1995). He received his Ph.D. in 1995 in religious studies at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands.
