"ASK THE DEAD AND THEY'LL TELL YOU" --POEMS FROM THE DIWAN OF SHMUEL HANAGID, HEBREW POET OF MOSLEM SPAINRenowned poet and translator Peter Cole will read and discuss his translations of poems by Shmuel HaNagid, Hebrew poet of Moslem Spain, at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 9, in Reed's Vollum Lecture Hall. Peter Cole attended Williams College and Hampshire College, and has lived in Jerusalem on and off since 1981, where he works as an editor and translator. He has received a number of awards for his poetry and his translations from Hebrew, including a G.E. Foundation Younger Writers Award, the Gerbode Prize for Poetry, the Marie Syrkin Fellowship for Jewish Belle-Lettres, a NEA Award for translation, and, most recently, a translation fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Cole is the author of two books of poems: Rift (Station Hill, 1989) and Hymns & Qualms (Sheep Meadow Press, forthcoming); and four books of translations including the Selected Poems of Shmuel HaNagid (Princeton University Press, 1995) and the poems and writings of Aharon Shabtai and Harold Schimmel. He is currently at work on a new book of medieval Hebrew verse translations.
