Retired ambassador Harriet Isom will be giving two talks on Tuesday, November 19 in Reed's Vollum Lounge. The first, "The Development Gap between Africa and Asia: Explaining the Puzzle," will be given at 4:30 p.m., and the second, "The Foreign Service and Other International Careers: How You Can Do It" will be given at 7:30 p.m. The talks, which are free and open to the public, are sponsored by the Walter Krause Fund. For more information call the Reed events line at 503/777-7755.

Ambassador Isom retired this year from her position as U.S ambassador to Cameroon, a position she had held since 1993. Before then, she had been ambassador to Benin from 1990 to 1992, head of embassy in Laos from 1986 to 1989, and director of Korean affairs at the State Department, 1984 to 1986.

The Walter Krause Fund was established by a gift from Reed alumnus Walter Krause '38 in honor of his parents, Ben and Pauline Krause. Krause earned his Ph.D. from Harvard and is John F. Murray Professor of International Business and Economics Emeritus from the University of Iowa. He has also been on the faculty of Texas Tech University.
