An early draft of the poem carried a subtitle “Song for a Mad Girl.” There is a one-word variant between this and the published version, in Line 28. “Zimmer’s book of Indian Art” refers to The Art of Indian Asia, Its Mythology and Transformations by Heinrich Zimmer. Listen also to “For a Stone Girl at Sanchi” under The Back Country for another example of that book’s influence on Snyder.
