Reedie Wins Prestigious Gates Cambridge Scholarship

Elizabeth Wilder '11 received one of only 40 scholarships that Gates offers annually to U.S. citizens.
Elizabeth Honor Wilder '11 has won a prestigious Gates Cambridge Scholarship, recognizing exceptional academic achievement and the capacity for leadership. The award will allow Elizabeth to spend a year at Cambridge researching Victorian ideas about wardship, education, the family, and the individual.
The scholarship was funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The selection of scholars is managed by the Gates Cambridge Trust, which began awarding scholarships in 2001. Since then, there have been 1,086 Gates Scholars from 94 countries. Of the 90 scholarships awarded each year, 40 are given to U.S. citizens. Giving to Reed benefiting from a national increase in college donations

Jan E. Kurtz, Reed's director of development was interviewed for the Chronicle of Higher Education story on this year's 8.2-percent increase in giving to colleges. Kurtz spoke about the bequest from Helen Stafford, a longtime biology professor who was one of the college's first female science professors. Professor Stafford, who died in August, made Reed the sole beneficiary of her will, leaving $8-million. Of that, $1-million will support the biology department, and the rest will go to financial aid.(February 15, 2012)

On January 26, President Obama gave a speech in Ann Arbor, Michigan, that emphasized the importance of a college degree and included concerns about the rising costs associated with obtaining one. President Obama pointed out the unemployment rate for those with some post-high school education is 4.1 percent-a rate less than half the national average. Reed College Visiting Professor of Sociology Alec Campbell wrote an editorial for the Des Monies Register that defends the rules of war as a way to help soldiers retain their humanity. The piece was written after a video of four Marines urinating on the corpses of Taliban fighters in Afghanistan was made public. Several Reedies contributed to Peter Korn’s Portland Tribune story on the Rose City's lack of MacArthur Genius grant recipients. Though, three Reedies have won the award, none were living in Portland at the time. The MacArthur Foundation annually chooses about 20 geniuses from various fields and hands each a no-strings-attached check for $500K to further their research, fund an artistic endeavor, or if the recipient chooses, buy a Lamborghini convertible. Roger Porter, Professor of English and Humanities; Stephen Arch, Laurens N. Ruben Professor of Biology; and David Schiff, R.P. Wollenberg Professor of Music all shared their thoughts in “Where are all of Portland’s bright ideas?”
