Reed President search is underway

Campus News

The Presidential Search Committee identified the goals for finding Reed's next president. The position statement is available to download from the committee's website at www.reed.edu/presidential_search. The position statement reflects the broad input that the committee has received from the Reed community over the last three months, including forums with the board of trustees and the alumni board in September and with faculty, students, and staff in October, as well as many individual comments received from all corners of the Reed community via email and conversations across the campus. The future challenges and desired personal qualifications were discussed in depth, particularly at the community forums in October, and have been refined based on the thoughtful and passionate comments we heard. We are grateful for your participation in the process. You have helped us build a compelling case for Reed and its presidency. (November 28, 2011) Read more...

Portland Monthly featured an article, "Old School: Happy 100th birthday to Reed—America's last great conservative college." In October, as part of its Oregon Experience series, Oregon Public Broadcasting TV aired "Reed," an hour-long documentary that focused largely on the college's response to money woes, curricular battles, and public perception while aspiring to maintain its founding principles. Washington Post writes about the death of Howard Wolpe '60

Reed in the Media

In October, the Washington Post wrote about the death of Howard Wolpe '60, former Michigan congressman and anti-apartheid champion. Wolpe, a liberal Democrat, served seven terms in Congress and advocated for economic sanctions against South Africa in the 1980s. In Thinking Reed, a series of essays by Reed graduates, Wolpe wrote that his days studying humanities at Reed were pivotal in shaping his political perspective: "All of this work focused on the most profound questions of social and political organization, of the relationship between the individual and the state, and of the means that were developed to manage societies and conflict in the classical era--the very questions that remain at the center of the twenty-first-century political discourse."

Wolpe remained involved with Reed through the years. He returned to campus to speak as a part of the Public Policy Lecture Series and was active within the alumni association. He will be greatly missed.
