Reed College Theater presents "Tartuffe" by Moliere continues on November 17, 18, and 19


Moliere's 17th century satire on religious hypocrisy, "Tartuffe" remains one of the classic comedies of the French theatre.


WHAT

Set in France during the reign of Louis XIV, the play was controversial in its own time for its commentary on religious hypocrisy. When this English translation by Richard Wilber was performed in New York, critics called the play, "an astonishingly delightful romp," and a" rollicking evening of grace and fun." The plot is full of twists and turns and quirky characters, but hidden in the events that lead to laughter are questions about what is done in the name of noble goals and what happens to people who choose to cling to particular points of view despite mounting contrary evidence. Directed by Kathleen Worley; costumes by Natalie Leavenworth; and set and lighting design by Max Muller.
