ASIAN AMERICAN ACTIVIST L. LING-CHI WANG TO VISIT REED
L. Ling-chi Wang, director of the Asian American studies program at the University of California–Berkeley and a noted champion of Asian American civil rights, will speak on "China and the Changing Identities of the Chinese in the Diaspora" on Thursday, January 17, at 7 p.m. in Reed College's psychology auditorium. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, is co-sponsored by the Northwest China Council, with support from the Collins Foundation and the Oregon Council for the Humanities. Wang has been active in the struggles for bilingual education in public schools and against the height requirement that prevented many Asian Americans in San Francisco from becoming police officers and firefighters. He also recently played a key role as a strategist for Wen Ho Lee, the former Los Alamos scientist charged with espionage.
Wang was born in Fujian, China, and grew up in Hong Kong. He earned a B.A. in music at Hope College, in Holland, Michigan; a B.D. in Old Testament studies from Princeton Seminary; and an M.A. in Semitic languages and literature from the University of California–Berkeley.
