EXPERT IN MEDIEVAL MANUSCRIPT ILLUMINATION
Jonathan J.G. Alexander, professor at the NYU Institute of Fine Arts, will speak on medieval manuscript illumination on Thursday, April 19, at 5 p.m. in the Reed College psychology auditorium. Alexander is a scholar of medieval European art, with a particular interest in manuscript illumination. Among his published books, Medieval Illuminators and Their Methods of Work (Yale, 1993) traces the evolution of manuscript illumination in Europe from the fourth to the sixteenth century. Alexander explores the social and historical context of manuscript illumination, considers the artists's methods, and discusses the range and nature of the visual sources. He is also the editor of The Painted Page: Italian Renaissance Book Illumination 1450—1550 (Prestel, 1994), and a co-author of Age of Chivalry: Art in Plantagenet England 1200—1400 (Royal Academy of Arts, 1987).
Alexander holds his D. Phil, M.A., and B.A. from Oxford University.
