REED THEATRE PRESENTS THE RELAPSE
The Reed theatre department will present Sir John Vanbrughs The Relapse Friday and Saturday, April 6 and 7, and Thursday through Saturday, April 12 through 14, at 8 p.m. in the Reed theatre mainstage. Admission is $1 for Reed community members, $3 for seniors, and $5 for general admission. For more information and reservations, please call the Reed theatre box office at 503/777-7284.
The Relapse mixes buoyant and bawdy comedy with a serious look behind the decorous pretensions of Restoration London. First performed in 1696, The Relapse lampoons the British courts veneer of elegance, exposing beneath it court societys amorality and licentiousness. Playwright John Vanbrugh (16641726) was famous for his wit and cynicism; his irreverence made him the target of contemporary diatribes on the immorality of British theatre.
Because the plays cinematic pace is reminiscent of 1930s film comedies, Reeds production will be staged using music, dance, and costumes from this decade. Reed theatre professor Craig Clinton will direct the play. John Vergin 75 composed the music and Carla Mann 81 choreographed the production.
