STEVEN LUBLIN TO SPEAK ON THE HISTORY OF MATH AND MUSIC
Steven Lublin, Distinguished Professor at the College at Purchase, State University of New York, will speak on "Pythagorean Dreams." The lecture, sponsored by Reed’s departments of mathematics and music, will be held on Thursday, March 1, at 4:30 p.m. in the Eliot Hall chapel at Reed College. Lublin has had a wide-ranging career as a performer on the modern piano and has been one of the pioneers of performance on today's reproductions of the fortepiano, the instrument on which Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert played. In 1987 he was chosen as soloist by the Decca label to record all the Beethoven piano concertos with Christopher Hogwood and the Academy of Ancient Music. A German music journal, upon reviewing these recordings, praised his work as "phenomenal."
Lubin describes his lecture as tracing certain perennial themes involving music and mathematics down through Western history.
Lubin studied philosophy at Harvard and piano at the Juilliard School, and he earned a Ph.D. in musicology at New York University, writing a dissertation on Beethoven’s music.
