LESTER LAVE TO SPEAK ON ALTERNATIVE AUTOMOBILE FUELS
Lester Lave ’60, professor of economics at Carnegie Mellon University, will speak on "Alternative Automobile Fuels: Electricity, Natural Gas, and Biomass Ethanol vs. Gasoline" on Thursday, November 2, at 7 p.m. in Reed College’s Vollum lounge. Lave will examine the costs, environmental implications, and sustainability of current propulsion technologies for automobiles. Lave will address a range of propulsion technologies, including compression ignition internal combustion engines and hybrid electric, battery powered, and fuel cells. Lave will discuss alternatives to gasoline that are attractive but more expensive, and which would require extensive infrastructure investments.
Lave is University Professor & Higgins Professor of Economics, professor of engineering and public policy, and professor of urban and public affairs at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His research, teaching, and consulting are focused on environment and public policy, ranging from recycling nylon carpet to electric cars. He is director of the Green Design Initiative, an interdisciplinary effort focused on pollution prevention and sustainability.
His education includes a bachelor of arts degree in economics from Reed College and a Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University. Lave was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences in 1982 and was the recipient of the 1998 distinguished achievement award from the Society for Risk Analysis, of which he was president in 1985—86. He has served on numerous committees and boards of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, the Institute of Medicine (for which he served as acting chairman of the commission of behavior and social sciences 1975—76), the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Medical Association, and the Office of Technology Assessment. He has acted as a consultant to many companies, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations.
