PHOTOGRAPHER TAMARA LISCHKA TO DISPLAY WORKS
"A Show of Hands at Reed College"
Portland photographer Tamara Lischka 92 will have two new bodies of work on display at the Vollum lounge at Reed College from October 1 to October 22: Figuratively Speaking and Perspectives. The Vollum lounge, in Reeds Vollum College Center, is open 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., weekdays, and noon to 2 p.m., weekends. The exhibition, which is sponsored by the Reed art department, is free and open to the public.
Figuratively Speaking focuses on the pure sculptural aspects of the hand, as well as the hands expressive and communicative qualities. Perspectives are small, intimate, and abstract works. "Hands themselves are wonderful and complex figurative models, capable of moving in a myriad of ways. Aside from our faces, no part of the body is quite as expressive as our hands," wrote Lischka. "They are wonderfully adept at conveying aspects of our emotional lives."
Lischkas photographs are included in the permanent collection of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France (Paris). In the past year her work has been shown in solo shows at Portlands Camerawork Gallery, White Gallery (Portland State University), and the Newport Visual Arts Center. Recently her work has been shown in group shows at Pacific University, Maryland Federation of Art, and the University of Oregon. Selections from Lischkas portfolio Epikoinos will be shown in a three-artist exhibition in October at the Northview Gallery of Portland Community College. Her exhibit at Vollum Gallery coincides with the citywide photography festival Photo Americas 2000, which takes place during October 2000.
