Reed production of "Macbeth" sets Shakespeare in the war-torn desert
TITLE: "Macbeth"
WHAT: Reed College Theatre presents Macbeth, Shakespeare's dark tragedy of power, guilt, and evil.
Framed by current events, the Reed production sets the action in a war-torn desert. Contemporary sources such as CNN and Vogue lend influence to the costumes and sets. "Rather than appearing as hags or crones, the witches in this production might have stepped out of a Prada ad in Vogue," says director Megan Evans, visiting assistant professor of theatre. "They nurture the seeds of Macbeth's ambition with equivocating enticements as potent as any media blitz."
The title role will be played by John Russell, returning after a year of study at the British American Drama Academy in London, as part of his senior thesis project.
The play is one of Shakespeare's darkest and most compact, and one of his most popular due to the spectacular scenes of "supernatural solicitings," which borrowed from the elaborate Masque performances given in the Royal Court.
WHEN: All shows begin at 7:30 pm on Friday and Saturday, November 5 and 6, and Thursday through Saturday, November 11 through 13.

COST: General admission is $5 and seniors are $3. Reed students, faculty, and staff are $1.
