CLASSICAL SCHOLAR ON THE POPULAR CRITIQUE OF HIGH WISDOM

Leslie Kurke, professor of classics and comparative literature at the University of California–Berkeley and a MacArthur "genius" fellow, will discuss "Aesop and the Popular Critique of High Wisdom" on Thursday, March 27, at 5 p.m. in Reed’s Vollum lecture hall. The lecture, sponsored by the Reed division of literature and languages, is free and open to the public. Kurke has written extensively on archaic and early Classical Greek culture, including Traffic in Praise: Pindar and the Poetics of Social Economy (Cornell, 1991) and her recent book, Coins, Bodies, Games, and Gold. Her work has redefined her fields of study and she was recognized in 1999 with a MacArthur Fellowship. She is an editor of Classical Antiquity, as well as co-editor of Cultural Poetics in Archaic Greece: Cult, Performance, Politics (Cambridge, 1993) and the forthcoming Cultures within Greek Culture: Contact, Conflict, Collaboration (Cambridge, 2003).

Reed College, in Portland, Oregon, is an undergraduate institution of the liberal arts and sciences dedicated to sustaining the highest intellectual standards in the country.
