POLISH SCHOLAR TO DISCUSS CONTROVERSY OVER MEMORY AND AUSCHWITZ
Monika Garbowska, Polish scholar of literature and the Holocaust, will speak on "Poles, Jews, and Auschwitz: a Controversy over Historical Memory" on Monday, April 26, at 4:30 p.m. in Reed's Vollum lounge. The lecture--sponsored by Humanities 220, Reed's modern Western humanities course--is free and open to the public.
Monika Garbowska is a visiting Fulbright Scholar at Brandeis University this year, in the department of Near Eastern and Judaic studies. Her research interests center on responses to the holocaust in Polish and American literature, and on the literature of observing and witnessing in the Holocaust.
Her regular affiliation is with the English department at Sklodowska University in Lublin, Poland, from which she has a Ph.D. in English literature. She wrote her master's thesis on Isaac Bashevis Singer. She has written about Yiddish culture, theories of translation, Jewish vs. Christian responses to the Holocaust in Poland and America, the reception in Poland of American Holocaust scholarship, and Alice in Wonderland in Poland. She has a forthcoming book on Jewish writing in contemporary Poland and has published in such important U.S. journals as Prooftexts. In addition, she has been an active translator of English language books into Polish, including works by John Barth, Salman Rushdie, Donald Barthelme, and Singer, and A.A. Milne's Winnie the Pooh books.
