"Encounters across the Centuries": Music for the Christmas Season at Reed College, December 4


Singers of the Collegium Musicum perform music by Josquin and Poulenc, and the Reed Chorus sings Stravinsky's Mass for mixed chorus and ten wind instruments.


WHAT

Reed College's music department presents "Encounters across the Centuries," with the singers of the Collegium Musicum performing motets for the Christmas season under the direction of Reed music professor Virginia Hancock and student conductors Vera Alcorn and Elizabeth Raby. Selections will include works by several Renaissance composers including Josquin des Prez and the 20th-century French composer Francis Poulenc. In addition, the Reed Chorus sings Stravinsky's Mass for mixed chorus and ten wind instruments, the composer's response to what he called Mozart's "rococo-operatic sweets-of-sin" sacred music. In writing what he called a "real" Mass, uncommissioned and outside of his own Russian Orthodox faith, Stravinsky sought to "appeal directly to the spirit."
