ROMP! 2013: The Baroque-A Concert and Free Symposium
Portland, Ore (January 7, 2013)--Reed College and Chamber Music Northwest present The Baroque, a concert and interdisciplinary symposium on February 8 and 9. This year’s partnership of Reediana Omnibus Musica Philosopha, or ROMP!, features Baroque music by recorder virtuosa Michala Petri and lectures by distinguished scholars Robert Harbison and Wendy Heller.
Michala Petri returns to Chamber Music Northwest on February 8 to perform works by Vivaldi, Telemann, Bach, and more, with Christopher Costanza, cello, John Gibbons, harpsichord, and Allan Vogel, oboe.
On February 9, Robert Harbison, professor emeritus of architectural history and theory at London Metropolitan University, and Wendy Heller, professor of music and director of the program in Italian studies at Princeton University, will explore the sights and sounds of the Baroque.
Professor Harbison’s research interests range widely across cultural history to include gardens and architecture, as well as the Baroque in all its forms. Harbison has authored numerous books, including Reflections on Baroque.
Professor Heller specializes in the study of 17th- and 18th-century opera from interdisciplinary perspectives, with particular emphasis on gender and sexuality, art history, and the classical tradition. Recognized for her expertise in Monteverdi, Cavalli, and the Venetian opera, Heller is the author of Emblems of Eloquence: Opera and Women's Voices in Seventeenth-Century Venice.
