Behind the Curve

In 1957, a young meteorologist named Charles Keeling placed instruments in California, Antarctica, and Hawaii to perform what was then considered an obscure measurement—the concentration of carbon dioxide in the earth’s atmosphere. Since then, the Keeling Curve has become one of the most iconic images in the history of science. It represents seasonal undulations in the atmosphere as plants in the northern hemisphere absorb and release CO2. It represents global warming, industrialization, and the accumulation of scientific knowledge.

Reed College Professor of Music Mark Burford Wins Irving Lowens Article Award

Reed College Associate Professor of Music Mark Burford won the prestigious Irving Lowens Article Award for his piece on Sam Cooke that was published in the Journal of the American Musicological Society. The award is bestowed annually by the Society for American Music in recognition of an article that makes an outstanding contribution to American music studies.

Professor Makley Wins ACLS Fellowship to Write about Her Work on Tibet

Portland, Ore--Charlene Makley, Associate Professor of Anthropology at Reed College, has won an American Council of Learned Societies fellowship for her project, “The Politics of Presence: State-Led Development, Personhood and Power among Tibetans in China.” The ACLS Fellowship is competitive—approximately 65 recipients are selected from more than 1020 submissions.
