Reed in step with President Obama's goals on lowering net tuition

On January 26, President Obama gave a speech in Ann Arbor, Michigan, that emphasized the importance of a college degree and included concerns about the rising costs associated with obtaining one. President Obama pointed out the unemployment rate for those with some post-high school education is 4.1 percent-a rate less than half the national average. Reed College Visiting Professor of Sociology Alec Campbell wrote an editorial for the Des Monies Register that defends the rules of war as a way to help soldiers retain their humanity. The piece was written after a video of four Marines urinating on the corpses of Taliban fighters in Afghanistan was made public. Several Reedies contributed to Peter Korn’s Portland Tribune story on the Rose City's lack of MacArthur Genius grant recipients. Though, three Reedies have won the award, none were living in Portland at the time. The MacArthur Foundation annually chooses about 20 geniuses from various fields and hands each a no-strings-attached check for $500K to further their research, fund an artistic endeavor, or if the recipient chooses, buy a Lamborghini convertible. Roger Porter, Professor of English and Humanities; Stephen Arch, Laurens N. Ruben Professor of Biology; and David Schiff, R.P. Wollenberg Professor of Music all shared their thoughts in “Where are all of Portland’s bright ideas?”
Mellon Foundation aids PNW liberal arts colleges

Congratulations to Professor of English Roger J. Porter on his Oregon Book Award nomination in general nonfiction for Bureau of Missing Persons: Writing the Secret Lives of Fathers.
