Recipients of the 2014 Rothchild Summer Stipend for Music Study, perform.  Reed Elkinton, piano, will perform music of Debussy, de Falla and Ravel. Rosie Sokolov, flute, will perform her own compositions and music of Takemitsu, John Savage, and Varese.

Reed students Rachel Apone, Max Boddy, violin; Isobel Reed, Henry DeMarais, viola; Chris Orita, cello perform Mozart's Quintet in G minor.  Ruben de la Huerga, Makoto Kelp, Gustavo Lopez, and Sarah Pearlman perform a trombone quartet.  Peter House, clarinet, performs solo clarinet works. Kenji Arai, marimba, performs Wind Sketches by Keiko Abe. Ace Furman, marimba, performs Etude No. 7 by Paul Smadbeck. Members of the Reed College orchestra perform In C by Terry Riley.

The fall orchestra concert program, led by conductor David Schiff, includes Haydn's Symphony #44 in e minor, String Quartet op. 33 #3 in C Major "The Bird", and Symphony #99 in E flat Major.

Fun with Folk Songs
7:30 PM in Kaul Auditorium

The featured work will be Johannes Brahms's Zigeunerlieder (gypsy songs), sung by the Reed Chorus and conducted by Virginia Hancock, with Rob Fishel, piano. The Collegium Musicum will sing a wide variety of folk song arrangements ranging from the German Renaissance through settings by Brahms and Arnold Schoenberg to spirituals and popular American song.

Tango For Musicians at Reed College presents Astillero, the cutting edge of Argentina’s contemporary tango vanguard. Since their founding in 2005, Astillero has revolutionized tango from within, creating highly original music that is urgent, aggressive, and bursting with rhythmic energy

Paul Roberts, piano

International pianist, writer and master class clinician, Paul Roberts, presents works of Debussy, Ravel and Mompou. It has been said of Catalan Composer Federico Mompou (1893-1987) that 'small is beautiful, smaller more beautiful, and smallest most beautiful.' In this presentation Paul Roberts introduces and performs a selection of Mompou's poignant miniatures alongside celebrated piano works of his (and Mompou's) favored Debussy and Ravel. The program will include Ravel's Pavane, Debussy's Preludes and Etudes, and Mompou's Musica Callada, Impresiones Intimas, and Canciones y danzas.

Concert—"A Royal Banquet"
7:30 PM in Kaul Auditorium

The Reed College Music Department will present a choral concert—"A Royal Banquet"—on Sunday 19 April at 7:30 p.m. in Kaul Auditorium. Admission is free.  The Reed Chorus and members of the Reed Orchestra will perform two of the Coronation Anthems that Handel wrote for King George II of England in 1727; and the Collegium Musicum will sing works composed for Henry VIII and Queens Elizabeth I and Elizabeth II, along with a general prayer for good government by Heinrich Schütz. Virginia Hancock will conduct.
