Multicultural Affairs seeks to create and sustain an inclusive campus environment that meets the needs of all members. This is accomplished through campus programming, facilitating constructive dialogues, and supporting all students as they explore the intersection of identities.
Multicultural Affairs Values
- Building an inclusive community that is mutually shaped and meets the needs of all members;
- The full and equal participation of all members of the Reed community;
- The exploration of privilege, oppression, and the intersection of social identities;
- Serious and open intellectual inquiry.
Multicultural Resource Center (MRC): The MRC is housed in the Student Center. Throughout the year, the MRC coordinates and sponsors a wide variety of programs and events such as guest authors and speakers, film screenings, lectures, artistic performances, conferences, and workshops. We provide programs that enhance leadership skills, enrich the academic experience, explore social and cultural issues, and celebrate cultural traditions.
Peer Mentor Program (PMP): The Peer Mentor Program assists first year and transfer students with their academic transition by pairing them with a peer mentor who provides guidance and support throughout the first year at Reed.
Tuesday Talks: Come discuss current events, diversity and inclusion at Reed, and ideas for dealing with issues of privilege and discrimination. Tuesday Talks take place bimonthly at the Student Center at noon and are facilitated by MRC interns, other Reed community members, and/or community guests.
Vine Deloria, Jr. Lecture Series: Vine Deloria, Jr. was one of the preeminent intellectuals of the twentieth century, whose work brought attention to the importance of place and traditions within Native American communities. Started in 2007, this series (generally held in March) honors Deloria's work and is a collaborative effort between Multicultural Affairs and the Office for Institutional Diversity.
Inclusive Community Orientation Session: Multicultural Affairs, the Office for Institutional Diversity, and Student Activities work together to coordinate a session during new student orientation that focuses on Reed's commitment to diversity and inclusion and seeks to raise awareness amongst incoming students about the differences and commonalities represented within our community.
Student Organizations: The MRC supports student efforts to organize events, programs, and peer support networks that contribute to the development of an inclusive campus community. In addition to helping with funding and support for specific events, programs, and peer support networks, MRC staff also can provide advice for how to make your organization's meetings more welcoming and inclusive, how to manage conflict, and how to connect with off-campus organizations and resources.
Alternative Breaks: The MRC organized its first Alternative Spring Break in 2012. Our goal is to continue providing educational immersion experiences focused on local communities and local issues during Fall Break and Spring Break.
